Richard TurnerRichard M. Turner
CEO, Commissionaires Kingston

Richard Turner is a highly accomplished individual with over 35 years of experience as a business leader, strategist, communicator and advisor. Throughout his career, he has also acquired a diverse range of skills that include executive-level management, finance, administration, technology, business development and security.

In 1975, Richard graduated from the St. Lawrence College Business Administration Program with a diploma in Finance (Honours). After graduation, he accepted a public accounting position with a chartered accounting firm in Kingston.

In 1979, Richard was recruited as a Business Administrator by a local broadcasting company. His mandate was to oversee the company’s transition from manual, paper-based systems to a fully modernized computer system capability; he played a pivotal role until the project’s completion in 1984. In addition, over the course of 19 years with this company, he was integrated into various security-related roles and responsibilities—including maintaining the integrity and security of the company’s four radio station computer systems and transmitter sites.

In 2001, Commissionaires Kingston hired Richard as the Director of Finance and Administration. Working closely with the CEO, Richard helped transform the company into a modern, mobile and stable business as well as a leading competitor within the private security industry.

During his six years as Director of Finance, Commissionaires Kingston evolved from having a two-screen, DOS-based computer system to a fully-integrated, dual server-based PC system. This upgrade facilitated a period of unprecedented growth as the company’s management team expanded from nine to more than 30 employees.

When the previous CEO retired in 2008, Richard was appointed to take leadership of the company.  Since becoming CEO, Richard has restructured how the company supports its existing and new clients—ensuring the company’s people and services are more accessible across a service territory that spans more than 300 kilometres. To achieve this, he has opened four new District Offices and assigned full-time District Managers with back-up staff to each of them.  This has contributed to a consistent, annual 12% increase in revenues. In addition, Richard expanded the company’s fleet of mobile security vehicles from one to more than 30.

One of his most significant achievements during this period was the purchase of Commissionaires Kingston’s own office buildings in order to accommodate the consistent growth of commissionaires and a balanced complement of competent managers in which to support them.

In addition to his business experience, Richard has been involved in his community as a Scout Leader, soccer coach and church treasurer.
