Commissionaires Northern Alberta, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut division has provided security services to Edmonton and the North for over 70 years. Drawing on the experience and training of our more than 1700 members, many of whom are military or RCMP veterans, we combine knowledge with integrity. As a full service security provider we offer trained security guards, mobile patrols, monitoring capabilities and identification services from our offices in Edmonton and Cold Lake. Our direct support to the law enforcement community is testament to our commitment to serving society while protecting our clients' people, property and interests.

Colonel John Slater, MBA, CD
CEO, Commissionaires Northern Alberta, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut
Colonel John Slater was appointed the CEO of Commissionaires Northern Alberta, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut in 2007. He joined the company with nearly 32 years of progressive command and staff experience in the Canadian Forces, combined with civilian business expertise and education. Today, John provides leadership and support to over 1,700 commissionaires who in turn service federal, provincial, municipal, law enforcement and corporate clients.
Prior to joining Commissionaires, John served as the Executive Director of The Military Museums in Calgary—recognized as Canada’s largest military museum outside of the National Capital Region. John played a pivotal role in assisting with the renovation and expansion of the facility, which now features galleries of all three branches of the Canadian Forces and brings together eight museum organizations.
During his earlier career in the Canadian Forces, John served with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry until his retirement in 2007. Throughout over three decades in uniform, John served across Canada as well as in Europe, the United States and the Middle East. His deployments included various North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and United Nations (UN) missions.
John holds a Bachelor of Engineering from Royal Military College in Kingston and a Master of Business Administration from Athabasca University. He is also a graduate of the Canadian Forces Land Command Staff College, as well as the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College.
John is a two-time recipient of both the Canadian Decoration (CD) and the United Nations Medal for Service in Cyprus, as well as the Special Service Medal (SSM), the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal (CPSM), and the United States of America Meritorious Service Medal.
Additionally, John is a Certified Human Resources Practitioner (CHRP). He is an active member of the American Society of Industrial Security, the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry Association, and the Canadian Legion, as well as an associate member of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police.
