Brigadier-General (Ret’d) C.A. (Cliff) Walker, CD
CEO, Commissionaires Saskatchewan (South)
Cliff Walker, a Canadian Forces veteran with a 35-year record of exemplary military experience, was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Commissionaires Saskatchewan (South) in 2002.
His military career began in 1962 when he became a Sapper in 14 Field Squadron RCE (Royal Canadian Engineers). He was commissioned in the rank of Lieutenant in May 1969 and continued to build on his leadership experience. He became the youngest Commanding Officer in the history of the Regina Rifle Regiment in 1976 and served in that capacity until 1979.
As a reserve Colonel, Cliff commanded Saskatchewan Militia District from 1986 until 1989 when he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier-General and became the Commander of Prairie Militia Area from 1989 until 1991. In 1991, he was appointed as the first Deputy Commander of the Land Force Western Area (LFWA) and helped oversee all Canadian army operations and administration in Western Canada from the northern Lakehead region of Ontario to the Pacific Ocean. He served in that capacity until 1996 and then spent one year on the staff at National Defence Headquarters before retiring in 1997.
BGen Walker was instrumental in founding the Bold Eagle Program in 1989. This endeavour was designed to assist First Nation and other aboriginal youth in getting into a summer program with the Canadian Forces and using that as a stepping stone to careers in the military, policing or corrections. Over 1,000 young people have graduated from the program in 21 years and it is considered to be the most successful aboriginal youth program in Canada.
BGen Walker’s military duties took him to every province and territory in Canada as well as abroad to Cyprus, Germany and the Balkans. He is a graduate of the NATO senior officer electronic warfare course at RAF Cranwell in the UK and was Canada’s senior military representative at the Commonwealth Games in Victoria.
He was on the Executive of the Saskatchewan War Memorial Committee that has constructed the large war memorial on the legislative grounds in Regina. This memorial now has the names of over 10,000 men and women who lived in Saskatchewan and lost their lives while serving in uniform between 1914 and the present day. He was also on the Executive of the Support Our Troops Gala that hosted the largest event of its kind and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of the Military Family Resource Centres, The Soldier On Fund, The Military Families Fund, and The Hospital Comforts Fund.
Cliff is a recipient of the Canadian Forces Decoration with two clasps (CD), The Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal, the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal, The Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal, the Commissionaires Long Service Medal (CSLM), and the Canadian Forces Commander Land Force Command Commendation.
