Stan Verran

Captain(N) Stanley F. Verran CD
CEO, Commissionaires Victoria, the Islands and Yukon

Capt (N) Stanley Verran has served as the Chief Executive Officer of Commissionaires Victoria, the Islands and Yukon since 2001. He is an accomplished leader with more than 45 years of management, contingency, security, and strategic planning experience—most of which was honed during 36 years of distinguished service in the Canadian Forces.

Active participation and interest in the Sea Cadets early in his life led Stan to begin a military career soon after graduating from high school. In 1966, he was commissioned into the navy and served at sea in two west coast destroyer escorts. In the years that followed, he was trained in a diverse range of skills and roles including air controller, weapons specialist, training officer, and strategic planner charged with developing the rationale for new ship programs. He also attended the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College in Toronto and the French Language School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

He served in many ships including HMCS St Croix, Chaudiere, Nipigon, Columbia, and Gatineau. Additionally, he served as Executive Officer HMCS Fraser and Commanding Officer HMCS Saskatchewan.

Stan has held other key leadership roles including Commandant of the Canadian Forces Fleet School at Esquimalt, Deputy Chief of Staff Personnel and Training at the Maritime Command Headquarters in Halifax, and Director of Military Program Planning in the Force Development Division at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa.

During the mid 90s, he continued to serve at National Defence Headquarters as Director of Force Plans (1993) and as Director of Force Structures (1994). In 1995 he was appointed as Base Commander, Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt, during which time he led the initiative to acquire the former Yarrow’s Shipyard property as an integral part of the military base.

Following his appointment as Base Commander, Stan undertook Japanese language and cultural training at the University of Victoria and was appointed Canadian Forces Attaché in Tokyo, Japan. On returning to Canada, he retired from the Canadian Forces in 2000.

Stan is a member of the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS), the Canadian Society of Industrial Security (CSIS), the Chambers of Commerce of Victoria and Esquimalt, and the Downtown Victoria Business Association. He is also a Director of Crime Stoppers and a Blockwatch Captain.

In addition to receiving the Canadian Forces Decoration (CD), Stan was presented awards by the Prime Minister and Ambassador to Japan for his diplomatic work.
