Overview 

By-Law Officer is responsibility for enforcing specific animal by-laws as proposed and sanctioned by the District of Vanderhoof. This is inspection, regulatory and investigational work entailing public relations and liaison tasks in which the incumbent exercises independent judgment, action, and tact.

We are looking for an individual with the ability to work well and collaborate with District of Vanderhoof Administrator. Working for the Commissionaires BC you are representing the District of Vanderhoof to the general public and will present yourself in a professional, friendly and respectful manner.


Job Profile

  • To provide, on average, 12 hours of animal control services per week; (624 hours per year);
  • To respond, as required complaints from the public in a timely manner, and as directed by the District;
  • To pick up, or receive, and impound all animals running at large; 
  • To prepare necessary documents and reports (including a monthly report), and attend and give evidence when & as required;
  • To issue dog tags and collect fees as required by the District;
  • To pick up and dispose of any animal found dead in the District as per directions; 
  • Will refer to licensed veterinary service for any animal that is to be euthanized. 

Job Requirements

  • Provide superior customer service to general public;
  • Provide good conflict resolution;
  • Promote By-Law awareness activities throughout the District;
  • Previous experience working with care and control of animals is an asset.


Key Qualification Requirements

  • Must provide own vehicle;
  • Hold a valid BC Driver’s license; 
  • Clean Criminal Record (check will be completed along with any other Security Clearances required);
  • Fluent English written, verbal and reading skills;
  • Minimum 19 years of age; 
  • Computer proficiency and experience working with Microsoft Office an asset.

Personal Suitability

  • Physically fit - particular attention to lifting, bending and stooping;
  • Able to work in a range of weather conditions; 
  • Have demonstrated interest and experience in serving the public;
  • Positive attitude with professional demeanour and strong interpersonal/customer service skills;
  • Excellent attention to detail to fulfill job duties and report writing;
  • Excellent problem solving skills and ability to handle emergency situations in a calm and professional manner; 
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in varying situations;
  • Takes pride in dress and deportment;
  • Be able and willing to learn District of Vanderhoof Animal By-laws;
  • The ability to use computers efficiently and effectively;
  • Previous work experience in the enforcement industry is an asset.
