Arnprior's tie to CFB Petawawa, its military personnel and their families continues to strengthen.

Just a few weeks after base commander Lt. Col. Keith Rudderham, made a visit to Arnprior to thank the town and Tim Hortons for providing gift cards for the military, and to comment on how pleased he is with the town's program to name new streets after veterans, comes news the military will be in Arnprior this spring.

Mayor Terry Gibeau told his council colleagues last Monday evening that the Third Annual Run for Military Families will be taking place again this year. The run will be held May 6-7 and will be passing through Arnprior on Tuesday May 6.

"They (military) are expanding their involvement in the community," he stated, adding a dinner is being held at the Arnprior Legion for the runners and their support personnel the evening of May 6 as well.

Run for Military Families began, under the direction and sponsorship of Commissionaires Ottawa with CFB Petawawa, in 2008 to raise funds and awareness for the Petawawa Military Family Resource Centre (PMFRC), a non-profit agency located at the military base in Petawawa. The centre's mission is to "enrich the lives of individuals and families of the military community through positive action, education and support."

Since it first began, the run has raised nearly $70,000 in support of the PMFRC.

BRIEF CEREMONY

During last year's event, runners were cheered on in Arnprior by local school children and a brief ceremony was held in front of the town hall.

The run kicked off at Parliament Hill and made its way through Kanata, Carp, Kinburn, Arnprior, Renfrew, the Township of McNab / Braeside, the Township of Whitewater Region, Pembroke, Petawawa, and through to the finish line in Petawawa. A big Red Friday Welcome Home Troops Rally celebration was held to welcome the runners home.
