Commissionaires Holds Annual National Conference

Focus on providing meaningful employment opportunities for today’s veterans

Ottawa, 13 June 2011 – Commissionaires, a national institution at the service of Canada’s veterans, will hold its annual national conference 12-19 June 2011 in Windsor, Ontario.

Mandated to provide meaningful employment opportunities to traditional and new veterans of the Canadian Forces and Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Commissionaires is the nation’s leading private employer of veterans.

It is also Canada’s largest security company, with 20,000 employees serving 1,200 communities across the country. It offers a broad range of basic and advanced security services, including guarding, mobile patrol, security consulting, fingerprinting and identification services, bylaw enforcement, and security training. Commissionaires generates $500 million in annual revenues, of which about 90% is returned to its employees consistent with the organization’s not-for-profit status.

“Commissionaires has been a home for tens of thousands of veterans following their military and police careers for over 85 years,” stated Bill Sutherland, National Chair of Commissionaires. “We are proud of our successful legacy and excited about the future. Today’s veterans and those of tomorrow will continue to need viable employment options following their service. These men and women who selflessly serve our country can count on Commissionaires.”

The national conference will broach such issues as recruiting, training and expanding business capabilities. “While we have opportunities for all veterans, offering challenging and rewarding opportunities to today’s younger and generally better educated veteran is a key element of our mission,” said Sutherland. “This will be a major focus of the national conference.”

The conference will be hosted by Commissionaires Windsor, one of 17 divisions that make up the organization. Established in 1934, Commissionaires Windsor delivers tailored security services to provincial courts, federal offices, the Windsor Airport, industrial and commercial installations, marinas and parks, as well as residential sites. It also provides bylaw enforcement services to the City of Windsor.

“Our success is the result of the combination of talents and experiences our mix of veteran and non-veteran members bring to the organization,” said Morris Brause, CEO of Commissionaires Windsor. “Our philosophy is mission first – people always.”

In honour of the key role Commissionaires has played in serving those who serve the nation at home and abroad, the City of Windsor has declared 12-19 June 2011 Commissionaires Week. An official flag-raising ceremony presided by Councillor Al Maghnieh, representing His Worship Mayor Eddie Francis, and Bill Sutherland, National Chair of Commissionaires, will take place on 13 June at 11:30 am in City Hall Square to commemorate the event.
