
Celebration Paintings
To mark this auspicious event, in 2009 Commissionaires donated $20,000 to commission six paintings by four highly regarded artists. These beautiful paintings not only express Commissionaires’ appreciation to the Navy but also provide a visual representation of the Navy at work.
About the Artists

John Horton is recognized as a pre-eminent marine artist and his works are displayed throughout Canada and the US, Europe and the Far East. Known as an historian with a passion for accuracy, John’s work combines exceptional painting skills with a particular flair for the marine environment. He is noted for his interpretations of the voyages of Captain Vancouver. He resides in Delta, British Columbia.

Douglas Bradford participated in the Canadian Forces Artists Programme in 2004 and produced seventeen paintings for his experience in HMCS CALGARY. Fifteen of his paintings are at the Canadian War Museum, while two are on tour with ‘A Brush with War”. Mr. Bradford continues to live and paint in Sault St. Marie, Ontario and is known for his ability to capture the landscapes of Northern Ontario.

Peter Rindlisbacher currently works as a full time artist, generally portraying naval Great Lakes and War of 1812 subjects. His works are displayed in museums and historic sites throughout Canada and the US. He works closely with historians in order to create his paintings using maps, models and primary source documents as much as possible. Peter currently lives in Amherstburg, Ontario.

Richard Rudnicki is an artist well known for his acrylic landscape and historical paintings of Nova Scotia. He is currently working on a series of studio paintings, a number of commissions and a children’s picture book–a true story that takes place in Nova Scotia in the mid 40s. Richard is involved in other projects where is both the writer and the illustrator. He lives and works in Halifax. Nova Scotia.
