Duties and Responsibilities

While Duties vary by specific assignment, the duties and responsibilities inherent in this security-related role may include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring security of employees, property, and visitors
  • Verification of identities for access
  • Monitoring of assigned areas
  • Ensuring security measures are taken based on client requirements
  • Overseeing movement of visitors and others on client premises
  • Conducting security inspections
  • On-foot perimeter and search patrols, inside and out-of-doors
  • Ensuring  the health and safety of self and others in the workplace
  • Maintaining adherence to CNS’ health, safety, environmental and quality policies and systems and practices
  • Maintaining adherence to CNS’ Policies, Site Work Instructions, and Site Supervisor’s direction
  • Escort Contractors when completing work on work sites.

Qualifications & Skills Sought:

The role of a Commissionaire requires both physical and mental fitness, as the level of responsibility to ensure security is high, and often in a variety of environmental conditions.

Qualifications for Success in this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Excellent verbal communication skills; bilingualism is always an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize, and adapt to change
  • Ability and willingness to successfully obtain a first aid certificate (Emergency First Aid; CPR; AED use)
  • Ability and willingness to successfully complete CNS’ Security Officer Course, and undertake 24 hours of HPA/Cruise Familiarization Training if necessary
  • Physical fitness to include:
    • Ability to navigate stairs with ease
    • Ability to navigate various types of terrain in all weather conditions
    • Good dexterity and balance
    • Good vision and hearing
    • Superior attention to detail, including ability to hear, observe, or smell changes to the work environment
  • Mental alertness to include:
    • React calmly, quickly and appropriately in a crisis situation
    • Ability to concentrate for a period of up to 12 hours
    • A good memory and ability to communicate observed characteristics/behaviours
    • Demonstrated sound judgement and problem-solving ability
    • Ability to remain alert for up to 12 hours
  • Demonstrated professionalism and sound judgment
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Possession of a valid and clean Nova Scotia driver’s license, or access to reliable transportation
  • Ability to obtain Enhanced Reliability (ER) and Marine Transport Security Clearances (MTSC) if necessary
  • Willingness to work as part of a team
  • Monitoring CCTV Cameras
